Former University of Arizona Wildcat and career journeyman quarterback Nick Foles has been granted a release from the Rams per his request. According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, Foles agreed to a lower guaranteed salary from the team in return for the opportunity to test the waters of the free agent market.
At the beginning of last season, Foles was acquired from Philly in exchange for Sam Bradford. Foles promptly signed a two year pact to the tune of 24.5 million dollars, 14 million of which was guaranteed. In 11 starts last year, he had 7 touchdown passes on 10 interceptions and was ineffective enough to cede the starting job in favor of Case Keenum.
Possible free agency destinations for Nick Foles include:
#4. Dallas Cowboys – After starter Tony Romo, the only quarterback on the roster to have actually taken a snap during the regular season is Kellen Moore.
#3. San Francisco 49ers – Even though the 49ers do have Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert, head coach Chip Kelly has a history – a successful history – with Foles. In 2013, while both were with Philadelphia, Foles had 27 touchdowns against just two interceptions in 13 starts, including a seven-touchdown game in Oakland.
#2. Denver Broncos – With Paxton Lynch unlikely to start in year one, the Broncos will be trotting out none other than former Jet great Mark Sanchez. And by great, I mean horrifically unreliable.
#1. Kansas City Chiefs – Foles also played for respected Chiefs coach Andy Reid, so there is some familiarity there. They have virtually no depth at the position behind stalwart starting QB Alex Smith.
